Where Have all the Nursery Rhymes Gone?
Where Have all the Nursery Rhymes Gone?

Where have all the nursery rhymes gone, long time passing…

If you were singing along to that line above, then you are a old enough to know a song from my youth, if not, it’s a good question!  Where have they all gone?  Who’s singing them?  Why not?  Questions, I’m full of them and I’m not sure I have any of the answers.  All I know is that nursery rhymes are great ditties I grew up with and could chant a good pile of them in my earlier days, I still have a repertoire, but even I have let some slip.

Nursery rhymes, skipping jingles & picking who would go first, rhymes, seemed to have disappeared.  Oh wait!  So have skipping, and playing group games it seems.  Step by step we are losing our children’s childhoods.  All of these gems were passed down from generation to generation in the home, in the school yard, and on the playground.

I remember skipping with my children and trying to pass along some of my double dutch tunes and style, but skipping just didn’t tickle their fancy and I lived for it.  In fact if I could still do it, I would, but you need two more people to turn the handles. lol  Imagine, instead of children skipping under the street lights at dusk it would be seniors.  Seniors playing hop scotch and drawing game boards in the sand for all kinds of jumping and throwing games.  I still search for good flat rocks when I’m walking, but we all know that a silver chain from a key chain was the best for hopscotch.  Oh, they don’t make many of those anymore either!

Back to nursery rhymes.  They are short and sweet and often if you really listen to them they do say maudlin things, like Ring a Round the Rosie, or Three Blind Mice, and some people don’t like that,  but they are catchy.  I love catchy tunes and so do kids.  It’s hard not to get pulled in by the rhythm and the joy of a nursery rhyme.  Plus, if you have kids, work with kids,  or know kids  nursery rhymes are a great way to interact with them at lots of different ages.  Softly cooing to a small baby as they drift off to sleep or belting out Baa Baa Black Sheep down the street to keep hungry kids happy, as you push the stroller very quickly, to get home for lunch and who hasn’t sung in the car?   It is so much fun and helps to pass the time and stop the avalanche of “Are we there yet’s” for every driving parent.

The great things about these songs and rhymes is that you can change them to suit your purposes.  Clean up songs, hand washing songs, driving in the car songs, loving you songs and ear your peas songs, are easily conjured up with your own words and the melody of a nursery rhyme.  You’ll be singing out loud with your clan in no time.  Oh……that’s why they’ve started to disappear, folks just aren’t singing out loud that much anymore.

Hmmm, it’s hard to remember all the words to Bohemian Rhapsody, but a nursery rhyme is just the ticket for singing out loud just as it is or customizing it and making it your own.  Give it a try today, even if there aren’t any kids around. Below are two of my favourites songs that fall in to the catchy tune & easy to sing categories.   One I wrote to copy a campfire song, another kind of tune I love to sing.  The second one other is pretty self explanatory.  Sing people, Sing!
